Hybrid RSI without dead air
Hybrid RSI works when you keep human interpreters where they must stay, use AI channels only where appropriate, and design a monitored fallback so listeners aren’t stranded when a channel fails.
This page is operational guidance. It does not claim AI is “as good as” professional interpreters, and it does not invent a universal accuracy or latency figure.
The first-answer design: who owns intervention?
“Dead air” usually isn’t a model failure—it’s an operations failure. Someone must be responsible for monitoring the live source and the delivered outputs, and must have authority to act.
A safe hybrid default
- Keep humans for high-consequence sessions and languages; don’t negotiate this boundary on show day.
- Label every channel by language and by mode (AI vs human-only vs hybrid) in the operator plan and audience materials.
- Assign an operator who hears the source and the delivered outputs (not only meters).
- Define escalation actions: mute/relabel a failing channel, switch listeners to a staffed human channel, or publish an approved fallback message.
- Train floor staff and help desk to route listener complaints to the operator fast.

Hybrid success depends on protecting three boundaries: the source feed, the production path, and the audience support path.
What hybrid must never claim
Do not pitch hybrid RSI as “replacing professional interpreters.” Hybrid design is a way to expand access while keeping humans where duty of care, regulation, nuance, or consequence requires them.
